That’s one of those scenarios that gets to me. Imagine that word got out that the ATF was ordering gun shop owners not to do sales with people using large amounts of money. The sales are perfectly legal, the buyers are not criminals, and there’s no way to prove that the money is anything but legitimate. The ATF would be roasted on a spit just to curb the gun lobby, who would be gravely telling every gun owner in America that if the ATF can order a gun shop to deny a guy trying to buy $20,000 worth of guns today, it might be $2,000 tomorrow, $200 the day after. It wouldn’t matter if you could prove that the purchases were meant for the cartels, the “precedent” would be all that mattered.

This goes to what has main suspicion for a long time, that the ATF’s real crime in the eyes of the Republicans was an attempt to do anything about the problem.

Everything else is smoke and mirrors.
