The US was already de facto at war with Germany, guarding the shipping lanes and even engaging in military actions with U-boats in the Western Atlantic, and I am sure it would not have taken long for the active war to begin after Germany’s Axis partner Japan had attacked the US.

I’m inclined to agree, but the smart move by Hitler after Pearl might’ve been to denounce Japan and declare his neutrality to see if domestic political pressure might’ve kept the US focused on Japan instead. Not that Hitler was making many smart decisions by then.
