re: #159 EdDantes

I lost my job at HP. There were seven managers in my department. 4 were replaced (including me). 4 were over 40. 3 were over fifty, including me. It has nothing to do with abilities. It is the last (in my opinion) area where discrimination is allowed. I did not pursue it because I thought it was futile.

Get in line… I was a full time programmer for 30 years, in 2005 I got laid off, after 13 years at the National Renewable Energy Labs (a DOE lab). I was 52. I’m 57 now, still haven’t found a full time programming job. Did some off and on contract work, and still work from home occasionally for Kaiser.

I been told off the record, “ageism” all the way. So now, I work part time as a cashier at a large supermarket chain up here in the Rocky Mountains… enjoying the job a whole lot, nice people, and I am such a pussycat working with the public… but I still wouldn’t mind getting back in my career. I still apply, over 500 apps in 5 years, but rarely ever even a phone interview.
