And how exactly does that work? IIRC eyes are watery, squishy, do not preserve well, and are generally replaced with glass replicas for taxidermy work.

And carrion birds appear to like them since it’s essentially a trope about them coming for them first when you are crucified on the Tree of Woe.

It works because it’s on TV.:)
