If I’m not mistaken, those symbols around the yin/yang are the eight basic trigrams of the I Ching hexagrams, no?

those are the eight distinct groups of three lines, in combinations of solid lines and dashes which are depicted. The unbroken one yin and the broken one yang. Thus the three solid lines are the maximum yin, and the three broken lines the maximum yang. The combinations represent all of the variations and the yin-yang symbol represents them in balance.
