It’s part of the Chicago Way.

I actually had a Chicago politician explain it to me very openly at a golf outing one time. You periodically go after someone less powerful than you and destroy them as publicly as possible. That shows everyone that if they buck you they will get the same.

This is right out of the Chicago playbook.

The problem with that is it only works if you successfully destroy them. If they find a way to survive and hit back then you still look like an asshole but now you’re the kind of asshole makes threats he can’t back up. I think Obama is going to end up in that latter category.
