Why should tax payers have to pay for his upkeep for 40 years?
Let’s say it costs $1 million a year to incarcerate him. That’s surely far more than reality, which I seem to recall is more like $50k - $75k, but we’ll go for the high end. Let’s say he’s in prison for 50 years. That’s a total of $50 million bucks.
There are more than 100 million taxpayers, but we’ll use that as our baseline. So the total cost per taxpayer works out to 50 cents - total, for his entire incarceration. A penny per year.
I’ve got a whole pocketful of change I’ll happily toss in, for those who don’t figure this is a bargain. Hell, with advances in medical science over the next half century, and the right kind of sentence, we might be able to keep him in there for a whole century. Plenty of time for him to ponder his decisions.
