At close range.

When you shoot someone who assaulting and you defend yourself, it is usually at close range.

As for being shot 4 times, perhaps the first three shots were meant to wing the idiot.

As for his being American, why is that relevant?

Because I’m an American citizen. And if the military of any other nation besides Israel shot one of our citizens to death our government would at least ask some questions about the incident.
