I’m in a Starbucks right now, sitting next to a black customer, one of the employees is mopping the floor and I am cravenly not initiating a “conversation about race relations in America.” This isn’t Sparta, it’s Simi Valley, and this is always in the back of my mind.

That was a theoretical nicety and a reality nightmare. Starbucks did not think that through.
