re: #158 dog philosopher

huh

beat me - i would never know if it was actually sumerian or akkadian, or old low franconian for that matter

do you know of any recorded readings in sumerian? I’d like to get some of it in my ear…

I don’t know of any Sumerian recordings. Its pronunciation is much less well understood than that of Akkadian/Babylonian, and it may just be that no scholar is willing to attach his or her name to such a speculative endeavor. Things we don’t know about Sumerian (that we do know about Akkadian) include how many vowels there were, whether there was a phonemic contrast between long and short vowels, and whether there was vowel harmony not consistently rendered in the spelling, And that’s just the vowels.
