I would have skipped the Rose Garden announcement and issued a press release, private meeting with the family. I would have avoid the “honor and distinction” comments about his service to some much more vague. The only tough call for me would be the comments about his health and threats to his safety if leaked. I suspect those are more political cover for the legal grey area, I don’t blame them for not wanting to notify congress so a little bit of ass covering is to be expected.

Have you ever given any thought to the fact that they may have done the public announcement to increase military morale? So those service members know that they are ever captured as Bergdahl was that the president and his advisers would do all they can do to get them out. Your nit over the honor and distinction I think is silly too, I think it’s only right to say that someone who has spent the past five years as a captive of the Taliban and at that tried to escape into hostile territory with that has served with honor. Really, the WH could have done all you suggested and there would still be a bunch of bs about what the WH did wrong. I really don’t think the WH did anything really wrong here.
