The main thing is, each visible light photon has from 178,000 (bottom of the red) to 312,000 (top of the violet) times the energy of a 2.4 GHz radio-frequency photon from a cell phone. It would take enormously more energy to transmit the same amount of information—unless you confine the visible light to a glass fiber, of course.
