Several years ago, when I lived in Florida, I went to Dade City to visit my grandmother for New Year’s Day. My mother and step-father also came down from Chicago.

My step-father and I were standing out on the front porch of her house at midnight, and some wingnut fired a gun into the air. The bullet came down through the porch roof, right between my step-father and me, and buried itself into the concrete between us.

There was about three feet of space between us.
