Because authoritarians don’t (can’t) understand capitalism. They see employment as serfdom.

That’s certainly what they’ve worked to reduce it to. The story of conservatism in the 20th century has been the continued effort to undo all the achievements of the Progressive Era while convincing the common folk that doing such is not simply “beneficial” but downright “American.”
