Ike should have just ran as a Democrat in ‘52 and let the GOP implode on itself. If the were going to be stupid enough to nominate MacArthur or Taft, he should have let them.

I don’t think that would have made much difference. It might have kept the John Birchers at bay - back then Republicans were fairly liberal on the social side. It wasn’t until after the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts passed that they started the SoCon (and rather racist) Southern Strategy to get Dixiecrats to cross over.
