Because the religious right has established the scope of the discussion. Their default assumption is everyone has (or needs to have) a religious belief, and the concept that some don’t never seems to enter their minds. They make such a big stink about every single law that might possibly “infringe” on their beliefs that lawmakers now have to tiptoe around religion (esp. Christianity) like someone walking around lava flows near a volcano.

In other words, they act as if America has an established State religion when in fact it doesn’t.

Though religion and religious institutes have essentially gotten special consideration throughout the history of the United States.
