Most likely, unless the Norks are aiming at South China, the Phillipines or Vietnam. My guess is the same as the poster upstream…they were monitoring Chinese sub activities or possibly underwater oil/natural gas exploration near the Spratleys…or both.

Hainan Island is the site of a secret (not any more) Chinese submarine base. She was probably monitoring their subs.
