At 50 years old, I just accepted a job at the local McDonald’s. 8 to 4, 35 ~37 hours a week, starting at minimum wage. That’s about $1000 a month with about 800 in bills. My first day will be Tuesday.

I also was offered a position, about the same level, by Walmart but I’d prefer to make hamburgers for a franchise owner than stock shelves for the benefit of the Walton clan.

With 8 out of the last 10 years being a stay at home dad, that was the best I could get in a small town.

Good for you, though. No one is going to dis you for doing honest work.

If you have a few construction skills, you might get some infrequent work if you know someone in this area or go to Charlotte (which most do), but the majority of businesses are “family” types which don’t hire outsiders, and the retail chains and fast food joints are the only other thing in most semi- or rural areas, if you don’t want to have to travel 50-100 mi round trip every day, just another expense added to take away those couple of extra bucks you might make doing so.
