The US spent years and over $1 billion (in 1950/60’s dollars) to develop nuclear powered aircraft…let that sink in, so to speak

Well this is also when they commonly did open air testing of nukes and people had mushroom cloud viewing parties. Aside from the immediate destructive effects folks didn’t seem to really appreciate the dangers involved.
