Political liars from the past would be envious. It’s as though LBJ had accused Paraguay rather than North Vietnam of attacking our ships in the Tonkin Gulf. Nixon could have claimed that the Watergate burglars were working for Wal-Mart. I am not a fan of the “good ole days” at all, but general gullibility seems to have increased by orders of magnitude.

This is remarkable, because it has coincided with a collapse in trust in the very institutions that are telling the lies.

People trusted LBJ and his government in a way people do not trust government today, and yet there is no way they would have swallowed such a whopper.
