I respect Boot because he’s willing to speak things aloud that are contrary to the conservative canon…which admittedly amounts to catching up with what the rest of us noticed ages ago (The Republican Party is full of Republicans! as driftglass puts it)…and fess up to the holes in his perceptions. Which is the *only* place to start if we want shit to get better.

He’s a contrast with anti anti Trump types like and French and Shapiro, who both refuse to concede that the current situation is a direct development of the past, and consistently insist that liberals are always even more wrong than Trumpian reactionary instincts.

Boot might help bring us a moderate, or at least a sane, conservative bloc. The “both sides are bad (but I’ll never side with liberals)” types complain but ultimately side with Trump because their issues are aesthetic—they prefer empty pomp and snobbery to pettiness and shit-flinging—rather than substantive.
