And this is what happens when you live in the desert for an extended period of time. I have had many encounters with the desert denizens and everyone of them have been slightly “off”. All one can do is nod politely, agree with what they are saying, and slowly back your way to your car.

We had quite a collection of, er, eccentrics in the area. I got the job in the first place because my opponent, who originally ran un-opposed, went on an LA news program and declared that the Air Force was hiding captured UFOs at a nearby base and that Burt Rutan’s Voyager aircraft was some kind of secret CIA spy mission.
The opposition party decided he needed an opponent after all and shanghaid me into giving it a shot.
Even the local cranks thought he was nuts. I mean, why use Rutan’s doodble-bug when you have you have your own UFO squirreled away?
I wasn’t publicly crazy and that was enough to win.
