FWIW, here is my opinion as a taxpaying American. Take the money. Is not a hand-out. It is a loan. You’ll pay it back when the insurance company pays up. It is the right thing to do, IMHO.

Wait a minute. How much money have you paid to the federal government and/or state government in the forms of taxes or fees or whatever? THAT’S YOUR MONEY! It’s not “free money” at all. The government doesn’t pull it out of its butt.

I have never borrowed money for a large sum loan. Ever. Yes, for a used auto when I was in college. I have always worked 2 and 3 jobs and have paid for my homes in cash. I don’t purchase anything unless I have the money in hand to buy it. Yes, it meant sacrificing for long periods of time.
I’m early retired now because I have planned this retirement since I started my career. All I ask for now is a little efficiency in the insurance services that I paid for. If they are not finished disputing what God force, wind or flood, caused the destruction of my house by the 15th of February, I will seek the assistance of my attorney.
