Makes me wish that Rumsfield had pushed for a larger Army back right after 9/11. Probably could have added light infantry divisions rather than mech to keep it a bit cheaper and they would have be very useful to have available right now.
Rumsfeld wanted to replace traditional armor with lighter, faster, more mobile troops. Ran headlong into traditional army orthodoxy. And in 2000, nobody wanted to increase the size of the standing army. We were at peace. The Soviets were toast. What could happen to change that?
