Turns out that oil slick wasn’t from an airplane. And the two mystery passengers with the purloined passports were, according to the travel agent who booked them, simply looking for the cheapest route to Europe, and made no specific request to fly to China.

I think if were an act of terrorism (which I still can’t rule out) someone would have claimed responsibility for it by now. It’s fairly unusual for any terrorist group to hatch a nefarious scheme and then promptly dummy up about it when it takes place. After all, terrorists thrive on media attention - that’s the entire point of pulling off a terrorist attack.

I’m reminded of the EgyptAir 990 for some reason, that went down in 1999. It was determined the pilot was suicidal for personal reasons that had nothing to do with terrorism.

A friend of mine was on that flight. :(
