There was a time when the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony and the civil institution of marriage were identical.

In our modern secular state they are not. If you choose not to recognize that two people are married in the eyes of God that is your religious right.

But you are required to recognize their civil rights as a married couple in the eyes of the law.
