We did not get to do the canal on our last trip, and I don’t know when we’re going to get to go again, but I wish we had.

I was there in 1979. I was sick as a dog the whole time we were in Mexico City. I slept in the sun on one of those colorful barges that ply the waters. Ate a roasted ear of corn bought from a woman on another boat. Listened to the Mariachis. Then the group (from my college) moved on to the National Autonomous University of Mexico. I slept on the lawn there.

A few days later, me and one guy hitchhiked from Cuernavaca to Acapulco. That’s one of those things that I would never do again, but it was great.
