I prefer to call any of them apostates. They’re simply not following the religious precepts of their religion.

The problem is that ‘apostasy’ not only has definition in Islam, but is also punishable by death. Therefore, if you called Islamist terrorists ‘apostates’, the impression the enemy will take is that you want to kill them all, and they’ll use that to fuel their “war on Islam” propaganda.
