re: #179 Hecuba’s daughter

And my RW brother reminds us that Lincoln was a Republican and the Republicans supported women’s suffrage. He is the perfect mark for Dinesh: the parties are exactly where they were a century ago — no changes.

Republicans used to be the liberal party, this is a true thing.
Democrats used to be the conservative party, this is a true thing.

The essence of conservatism — everywhere, always — is attachment to the status quo. Conservatives like what they’re used to. They want tomorrow to be just like yesterday and today.

At the time of the American Revolution, or the abolitionist movement, or women’s suffrage, or civil rights, or just about anything else… the conservative position has always always been “let’s not change anything. let’s just keep it as is.”

The only conservatives who ever supported any of those things were decades after the fact, once they were used to it, because it was the new status quo.

Republicans used to be the liberal party.
Democrats used to be the conservative party.

Starting in the 1960’s, and continuing for the next several decades… whatever liberals were still in the Republican party became Democrats. Whatever conservatives were still in the Democratic party became Republican.

Dinesh and his fans would prefer you not notice that it was always, and still is, Liberals who supported these things and Conservatives who opposed them.
