A partition of Ukraine along the line of the Dnieper River - he gets that pro-Russian part of the country, a part of Ukraine that is heavily industrialized to boot. The loss of the Donetsk Basin would be a major blow to Ukraine’s economy.

That seems to be a reasonable risk/reward for him… for as far as he’s come.
