The freakouts over Reza Aslan’s book keep getting better. Now I’m obligated to read it. Heh.
A lot of the freakout is that he’s a Muslim and that he portrays Jesus as less than the Son of God.
The standard Islamic view is that Jesus is a prophet of God, and will return at the End Times in Islamic eschatology. He is called ‘Messiah’ in the Qur’an. It’s just that the idea of Jesus being God incarnate, or a begotten son of God Himself, is considered paganism in Islamic theology. It violates the doctrine of the Oneness of God.
