Well, its a gray area (Catholic Schooled here for 13 years). My thought is of when Jesus said, “Pay unto Caesar what is Caesar’s. Pay unto the Lord what is the Lord’s.” So you can be OK with the idol if it a form of pride. But you should not revere the item beyond God.

But its no the flag we have an issue with - its money. I remember in school as a kid when the teachers/nuns would mention money as a form of idol worship. This lesson though apparently didn’t get around much as it seems to have only gotten worse since the 1990s.
