Dumb question. If Trump hadn’t toughened the penalties for mishandling classified information, in his attempt to “gotcha” Hillary, how much trouble would he still be in? Are the other charges serious enough that he’d still be living at the top of Shit Mountain, or is he really hoist by his own petard here?

There’s still enough to prosecute Trump.

Mishandling is just one aspect.

Possessing classified info is covered under espionage law. That’s a felony in its own right. Trump had no right to possess classified info after leaving the WH. It’s still theft of govt property.
