A quick google search brought up almost 3600 links to pages who say the story is true. I’ve only flipped through the first few pages but I can’t find what I would consider an “honest” source.

I’m going to attempt to deal with the “pact with the devil” rumor:

According to what I read, right before the slave revolt, there was a gathering of escaped slaves that involved a vodoo priestess. Her rituals and divinations were much of what convinced the slaves that the time for revolt was a hand. There was no “pact with the devil”, rather a blending of religions that lead Haiti’s enemies to start that rumor to lower the reputation of the newly freed slaves.
