In the Senate, Leah Vukmir (R-Wauwatosa) chairs the committee where the screening bill has languished and said she believes decisions about newborn screening should be made by an existing committee of medical professionals, not state lawmakers.

But the expert committee she says she wants to empower already has weighed in on the test. Members “strongly” recommended screening all infants in Wisconsin for critical congenital heart disease — two years ago.
