Lankov argues that Kim (any one of them) can’t really even start liberalizing NK acc. to China’s example, because there is SK, which is, ethnically, the same people in the “same” geographic/climatic circumstances. China could acknowledge “some” sort of economic deficiency in comparison to the West due to “objective reasons” (and thus start improving things), but NK can’t since the example of SK being successful in the very same circumstances is right there, under the people’s noses. The cognitive dissonance would be just too great.
