We were talking the other day about the horror that was Belgian Congo.
Belgian King Leopold II was forced to cede his private Congo colony to Belgium in 1908.
Leopold went to great lengths to conceal potential evidence of wrongdoing during his time as ruler of his private colony by burning the archives. The burning went on for days.
Leopold told his aide that even though the Congo had been taken from him, “they have no right to know what I did there.”
