He is either stupid or evil or possibly both. There is no interpretation that makes him a good guy.

I don’t agree. I’d say he’s doing the smart thing when the witch hunters are out: Stay off their radar till they start to wear out their welcome. He didn’t say he does not believe in AGW, and he might not have seen the latest science. I don’t think that makes one evil; Dissembling your way past the witch hunters normally makes you smart and a survivor.
