I disagree with that assertion. Comparing Putin and Russia to the USSR is rather misleading.

Not that Putin is a peace-loving democrat, but I think that his interests lie in expanding his influence within the borders of the former USSR, not in Eastern Europe.

Ukraine and the Baltic States were part of the former USSR (along with Georgia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, &c). Poland, the Czech Republic, and the rest of Eastern Europe (minus Yugoslavia and Albania) were part of the Warsaw Pact, in other words part of the USSR in all but name.
