Today I’m remembering my father, a Navy corpsman attached to the Fourth Marine Division on Iwo Jima, and his stretcher partner who was KIA by an explosion as the two were out doing collections. I’m also remembering my dad’s cousin (and best friend) with the Fifth Marine Division, who was KIA near Hill 362A/Nishi Ridge on Iwo. He was trying to help someone else to (relative) safety, when he was cut down by machine gun fire. My brother was named after him.
