It’s my understanding that Roddenberry chose the name “Ferengi” for the space capitalists as a direct reference to the East India Company’s corporate contract-rule of India under the Raj.

“Firanji” being the Hindi/Urdu/Farsi/Arabic word for “white foreigners” and particularly European colonialists, and all that.
