To everyone who commented on my granddaughter being diagnosed with Down Syndrome, here is a message from my daughter:

My daughter is a pediatric nurse practitioner from Columbia University, so she has a large support group and many resources.

At the very least, your granddaughter has been born in a time and in a society that no longer shuns families and children who aren’t some fictional standard of normal. I can’t imagine the challenges that your family will face, yet I can be proud that the taboo is no longer tolerated in most circles.

Rebecca will grow surrounded by family that love her —isn’t that the basic thing we want for all our children?
