A close approximation would be to plunk someone from an all-white environment into Africa or Asia, where they are the minority. Outright prejudice might not happen, but just experiencing the situation might enable them to realize that we’re all just people.

I’ve only had one instance of discrimination here in China, when a hotel clerk simply refused to deal with me because I was a foreigner. It was a shitty experience, one that I hope will not happen again. But I know there are people in America who have to deal with kind of shit every single day, because of their skin color, language or religion. So, I’m not going to make a big deal about it. I’ll just never go back to that hotel again.

I have to admit one of the most fun times I had as a tourist was being the only American in Portugal but then again most everyone spoke English so it wasn’t like I was completely a fish out of water.
