I don’t have any personal experience with participating in protests, but FWIW I think there’s always going to be moderate to major level of messiness in protests.
There is no such thing as a protest that is forceful enough to get the job done without also getting a whole bunch of useless carping from the sidelines on how it should have been done better.
True, lasting change is always messy. You need people working within the system to influence the legislative agenda and codify change into law (i.e. voting, running for office, calling legislators, etc.) and people working outside the system to put pressure on actors within the system (i.e. protests, sit-ins, other disruptive acts).
