This was the night we got Esther and Lionel, about three weeks before her health deteriorated very suddenly, weeks before her 18th birthday. She sounded like a cat who has smoked a pack a day for years, a very distinct meow.

She will always, always be the first kitten in my heart.

I know. It’s heartbreaking.
