I concede that point but where I appreciate it as about the excesses of the 80’s. You ain’t wrong about Pacino especially tho. It’s not his best work.
One of the more frequent critiques I hear about Pacino’s performance as Tony Montana is that it’s so over-the-top.
And it is - but then again, Tony Montana is very much an over-the-top character…..there’s really no other way to play it. All that character has is sheer bravado and ruthlessness; there’s really nothing else there.
He’s sorta like Trump in that sense - Trump can whip up a Cat 5 hurricane of bullshit, but really, that’s all there is to him. Imagine a much younger Trump as a Miami cocaine cowboy in the early 1980’s, and he’d probably be not much different from Pacino’s portrayal of Tony Montana.
