Old Portrero in S.F. does a good rye too, but it’s a bit overpriced. I just keep the yellow Jim Beam Rye on hand for mixing drinks. In fact, bourbon’s the only liquor I like neat. I’m still working towards developing a taste for Scotch, but it’s gonna take time. I’m patient though; took me 15 years to tolerate sushi, now I love it. Go figure.

I used to down scotch and irish whiskey neat, but can’t touch them anymore. Bad associations with them both. Still, rye can be drunk neat - it’s good stuff, though not the Beam Rye, which always seemed to me to be rather weak. WT do a very good rye, at a nice high proof, for not too much $$.
