Thankfully for me, the local head shop & record store imported a whole lot of stuff better than what was usually on the radio. The Clash, Madness, XTC, The Specials, U2 before they were big, Peter Gabriel’s three self titled albums, The Boomtown Rats, Ian Druy, Nick Lowe, Patty Smith Group, Television, The Replacements, Husker Du, Urban Guerrillas and so much other good stuff. I could put up with the radio because I knew when it got too bad, I had mix tapes better than anything they’d play.
I think we’d have had to go all the way to Hanover to find a Head Shop. Maybe York.
