I remember the story a friend of mine told quite a while back… he was driving home late at night, freeway empty, not trying to speed, but not really paying attention to how fast he was going… the traffic cop who stopped him clocked him at 115 mph. And it didn’t take him long to get up to that speed either.

I’ve never driven a train, so I don’t know whether the cases are parallel, but it’s easy for attention to lapse on an empty road you know well.

Back in the day when Minute by Minute was likely to come up on the car radio, I’d be zoning out, driving down the freeway, until: “Whoa! Why am I going 85?” Some rhythms can do that to you.
