Here in town we only recently got actual street addresses. (The streets were named, but the houses weren’t numbered.) The Post Office required the town to assign numbers, so the volunteer fire brigade numbering system was used to number our houses.

Out in the county, the houses don’t have numbers here.

My hometown only got street numbers in the 80s. The mail STILL is only delivered to P.O. boxes, since the town is too small for urban free delivery and too big for rural free delivery.
